Plano-convex cylindrical lenses are ideal for one-dimensional magnification applications. While spherical lenses act symmetrically on incident light in both directions, cylindrical lenses act on incident light in only one direction. A typical application is the shaping of a deformed beam achieved with a pair of cylindrical lenses. A pair of plano-convex cylindrical lenses can be used to collimate and round the output of a laser diode. Another possible application is to use a single cylindrical lens to focus the diverging beam onto a detector array. To minimise spherical aberration, the collimated light should be incident from the curved surface of the lens when converging the collimated beams into a line, and the line source should be incident to the flat surface of the lens when collimating the line source.
